sympathomiemetic produces effects similar to those that induce stimualtion of the sympathetic nervous system
Catecholamines contain a catechol nucleus and an amine containing sidechain; very potent but susceptible to oxidation/autoxidation
What are the two chemical categories of sympathomimetics? Functionally, how are they classified? catecholamines and non-catecholamines; direct acting (adrenergic agonists), indirect acting (act presynpatically), mixed acting (release NE and also act directly on receptors)
Non-catecholamines relatively stable, not metabolized by MAO or COMT, most given orally
