The Circle of the Month

QuestionAnswer
Phases A changing appearance of the Moon defined by an illuminated portion and a dark portion, divided by the Moon's terminator
Orbit A generally circular path of motion of a celestial body that is captured by the gravity of a larger body
Lunar month A complete cycle of the Moon's phases. About 29 1/2 days
Lunar calendar Used to measure long periods of time by counting lunar months
Solar calendar Based on the Sun's annual cycle of the year
New Moon When the Moon is between the Sun and the Earth and we can't see the Moon
Crescent A phase of the Moon in which 1/4 of the visible portion is illuminated, appearing as a "fingernail" shape.
Waxing When the light and appearance of the Moon increase, making it more visible
Earthshine When the Moon seems to have a smoky glow, where the Moon's features can be made out. Caused by light from the Sun reflecting off the Earth and onto the Moon
First Quarter When the Moon completes 1/4 of its monthly cycle, so the waxing half-moon is seen in the night sky
Gibbous A phase of the Moon in which 3/4 of the visible portion is illuminated, giving the Moon a "humped" appearance
Full Moon When the Moon is directly behind the Earth and Sun and is clearly visible in the night sky
Waning When the light and appearance of the Moon decrease, making it less visible
Last Quarter When the Moon completes 3/4 of its monthly cycle, so the waning half-moon is seen in the night sky
