| Lunar month | A complete cycle of the Moon's phases. About 29 1/2 days |

| Waxing | When the light and appearance of the Moon increase, making it more visible |
| Earthshine | When the Moon seems to have a smoky glow, where the Moon's features can be made out. Caused by light from the Sun reflecting off the Earth and onto the Moon |
| First Quarter | When the Moon completes 1/4 of its monthly cycle, so the waxing half-moon is seen in the night sky |
| Gibbous | A phase of the Moon in which 3/4 of the visible portion is illuminated, giving the Moon a "humped" appearance |
| Full Moon | When the Moon is directly behind the Earth and Sun and is clearly visible in the night sky |
| Waning | When the light and appearance of the Moon decrease, making it less visible |
| Last Quarter | When the Moon completes 3/4 of its monthly cycle, so the waning half-moon is seen in the night sky |
