ENERGY

QuestionAnswer
Chemical energy Energy possessed by substances that can do work through chemical reactions.
Food has potential chemical energy for your body. When gasoline is burned, its chemical energy can be converted to mechanical energy for a car.
Conduction takes place when heat is transferred from one substance to another by DIRECT CONTACT..
Convection occurs when a hot liquid or gas moves from one region to another, carrying heat energy with it. Circular currents, for example, hot air rises and cool air sinks.
Electrical energy Energy generated by moving electrons. Most energy producing power plants (like nuclear and coal-fired) produce electrical energy for homes.
Energy The energy to do work or bring about change.
Energy crisis A time when reliable or affordable sources of energy are not readily available.
Fossil fuels Coal, oil, and natural gas, which come from the Earth.
Geothermal energy Uses the natural heat of Earth’s interior to produce steam, spin a turbine and generate electricity.
Heat energy The total kinetic energy of a substance’s atoms. The more movement of an object, the higher the heat energy it emits.
Hydropower Uses moving water to spin a turbine and generate electricity.
Kinetic energy The energy of motion. .All objects have some kinetic energy because, according to the Kinetic Theory of Matter, all particles are perpetually moving.
Light energy form of energy visible to the human eye.
Mechanical energy Kinetic energy with which moving objects do work.A generator converts mechanical energy to electrical energy.
Nuclear power Harnesses the energy stored in the atoms of certain substances to produce electricity. Nuclear power plants operate similar to coal-fired power plants, except that they use the fission of atoms for fuel.
Potential energy The energy of position; the higher the position of an object, the more potential energy it has.
Radiation occurs when energy is transported by waves that travel through space. When you go outside and feel the heat form the sun, you are feeling the sun’s energy waves traveling through space; have the ability to travel through a vacuum.
Vacuum no molecules; empty of matter
Solar energy Harnesses solar radiation to heat homes or to power appliances; completely renewable and it can be stored in batteries for rainy days.
Sound energy Energy generated when a vibrating object’s kinetic energy moves through matter in waves.
Wind power Captures the movement of the wind to spin a turbine and generate electricity.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
