Physics 1D motion
Velocity, Displacement, Acceleration, Free Fall
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Frame of reference | an object which is used to measure changes in position |
| Displacement | change in position from the starting point |
| Velocity | the measure of rate of movement of an object. Includes direction of motion. |
| Average Velocity | total displacement divided by total time. (includes direction) |
| Average Speed | distance traveled divided by total time. (does not include direction) |
| Slope | rise over run on a graph. Divide the change in the y coordinates by the change in the x coordinates |
| Instantaneous Velocity | velocity of an object at a certain moment in time. |
| Instantaneous Speed | the number given to you by your car’s speedometer. |
| Acceleration | Rate at which velocity changes over time. Can be positive or negative. It is determined by a change in speed, direction, or both. |
| Free Fall | Motion of a body when the only force acting on it is gravity. |
| Air Resistance | Friction created by air that slows the acceleration of an object in free fall. |
| Terminal Velocity | The constant speed an object reaches when falling through a medium. It does depend on mass, shape, and size. |
