Medications commonly used in medsurg setting

coumadin depresses hepatic synthesis of vitamin K coagulation factors
lisinopril selectively suppresses renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system; inhibits ACE, prevent conversion from angiotensin 1 to angiotensin 2
cardizem produces relaxation of coronary vascular smooth muscle, dilates coronary arteries, slows SA/AV node conduction times, dilates peripheral arteries
metformin inhibits hepatic glucose production and increases sensitivity of peripheral tissue to insulin
zocor (simvastin) inhibits HMG-CoA reductase enzyme, which reduces cholesterol synthesis
Hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ) acts on distal tubule and ascending limb of loop of Henle by increasing excretion of water, sodium, chloride, potassium
Clopidogrel inhibits ADP induced platelet aggregation
Lasix inhibits reabsorption of sodium and chloride at proximal and distal tubule and in the loops of Henle
Neurotin mechanism unknown
Albuterol causes bronchodilation by action on Beta 2 (pulmonary) receptors which relaxes the smooth muscle
Propranolol nonselective Beta blockers with negative inotropic, chronotropic, dromotropic properties
Januvia improves glucose homeostasis
