Antiseptic pertaining to an agent that works against sepsis; putrefaction
Antipyretic pertaining to an agent that works against fever
Antitussive pertaining to an agent that works against coughing
Apathy condition in which one lacks feelings and emotions and is indifferent
Asepsis without decay; sterile, free from all living microorganisms
Autoclave Appartatus used to sterilize articles by steam under pressure
Autonomy condtion of being self-goverened; to function independently
Axillary pertaining to the armpit
Biopsy (Bx) surgical removal of a small piece of tissue for microscopic examination; used to determine a diagnosis of cancer orh other disease processes in the body
Cachexia condition of ill health, malnutrition, and wasting. It may occur in chronic diseases such as cancer and pulmonary tuberculosis
Centigrade (C) having 100 steps or degrees, like the celsius temperature scale; boiling point equals 100 degrees celsius and freezing point equals 0 degrees celsius
Centimeter (cm) unit of measure in the metric system; one hundredth of a meter
Centrifuge device used in a laboratory to separate solids from liquids
Chemotherapy treatment using chemical agents
Chronic pertaining to time; a disease that continues of a long time; showing little change in symptoms or course
Diagnosis (Dx) determination of the cause and nature of a disease
Diaphoresis profuse sweating
Disease lack of ease; an abnormal condition of the body that presents a series of symptoms that sets it apart from normal or other normal body states
Disinfectant chemical substance that can be applied to objects to detroy pathogenic microorganisms
Efferent carrying impulses away from the center
Empathy state of projecting one's own personality into the personality of another to understand the feelings, emotions, and behavior of the person
Epidemic pertaining to among people; the rapid, widespread occurence of a widespread disease
Etiology study of the cause of disease
Excision process of cutting out, surgical removal
Febrile pertaining to fever
Gram (g) unit of weight in metric system; a cubic centimeter or a milliliter of water is equal to the weight of a gram
Heterogeneous pertaining to a different formation
Illness state of being sick
Kilogram (kg) unit of weight in the metric system; one thousand
Liter (L) unit of volume in the metric system; equal to 33.8 fluid ounces or 1.0567 quarts
Macroscopic pertaining to objects large enough to be examined by the naked eye
Malaise feeling of discomfort, uneasiness; often felt by a patient that has a chronic disease
Malformation process of being badly shaped, deformed
Malignant bad wandering; pertaining to the spreading process of cancer from one area of the body to another
Maximal pertaining to the greatest possible quantity, number, or degree
Microgram (mcg) unit of weight in metric system; 0.001 mg
Microorganism small living organisms that are not visible to the naked eye
Microscope instrument used to view small objects
Milligram (mg) unit of weight in metric system; 0.001 g
Milliliter (ml) unit of volume in metric system; 0.001 L
Minimal pertaining to the least possible quantity, number, or degree
Multiform occuring in or having many shapes
Necrosis condition of tissue death
Neopathy new disease
Oncology study of tumors
Pallar pailness, lack of color
Palmar pertaining to the palm of the hand
Paracentesis surgical puncture of body cavity for fluid removal
Prognosis literally means of a prediction of the course of the disease and the recovery rate; means condition of forth knowledge
Prophylactic pertaining to preventing or protecting against disease
Pyrogenic pertaining to the production of heat; fever
Radiology study of radioactive substances
Rapport relationship of understanding between two individuals, especially between the patient and their physician
Syndrome combination of signs and symptoms occuring together that characterize a specific disease
Thermometer instrument used to measure the degree of heat
Topography description of a body part in relation to an atomic region in which it is located
Triage sorting and classifying of injuries to determine priority of need and treatment
