REACTIONS

QuestionAnswer
Chemical equation A balanced chemical equation shows that the number of atoms in the reactants is the same as the number of atoms in the products.
Chemical reaction A process in which one or more substances are changed into other substances. Chemical reactions always involve a change in energy; energy is either given off or absorbed.
Combustion Carbon combining with oxygen to form carbon dioxide.A fire is an example of a combustion reaction.
Decomposition Breaking down a substance into simpler substances.Decomposition is opposite of a synthesis reaction
Displacement Switching one substance for another. In a single displacement reaction, one metal is usually replaced with another. In a double displacement reaction, two elements usually switch places.
Endothermic A chemical reaction that absorbs heat.A cold pack works by absorbing energy from the surroundings, thus making it endothermic and cold.
Exothermic A chemical reacting that gives off heat.A fireworks explosion is an example of an exothermic reaction.
Products Substances produced by a chemical reaction; written on the right side of a chemical equation. Hydrogen and oxygen are the products in the following equation
Reactants Substances produced by a chemical reaction; written on the right side of a chemical equation.Hydrogen and oxygen are the products in the following equation
Synthesis Combining substances to form a new substance. The rusting of metal is an example of a synthesis reaction.
Thermic Having to do with heat. All chemical reactions have some thermic properties, whether they lose or gain heat.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
