MIXTURES AND SOLUTIONS
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Concentrated solution | A relatively large amount of solute compared with the amount of solvent. A concentrated solution is usually darker than a dilute solution because it has more solute in it. |
| Desalinization | To remove salt from sea water. |
| Dilute | Small amount of solute in a large amount of solvent. |
| Evaporation | The process of allowing a liquid to evaporate and leave behind any solid that was in the liquid. |
| Filtration | The process of separating a mixture of a liquid and a solid by straining it through a porous material. |
| Heterogeneous | Not equally distributed. |
| Homogeneous | Equally distributed. All solutions are homogenous mixtures because they have an even distribution of solvent and solute throughout. |
| Mixture | Combining two or more different substances without those substances bonding together. Mixtures can be heterogeneous (pulpy orange juice) or homogeneous (soda pop). |
| Polar | Different parts of a molecule display slightly different charges. Water is a polar molecule because the hydrogen atoms are slightly positive and the oxygen is slightly negative. |
| Saturated | The maximum amount of solute has been dissolved in the solvent. A saturated solution cannot hold any more solute. |
| Sieving | A method of separating solids of various sizes. Sieving only works with solid substances. |
| Solubility | The maximum amount of solute that a solvent will dissolve at a given temperature. Solubility is affected by temperature, agitation, and the size of the solute. |
| Solute | The substance in the smaller amount in a solution. Sugar is the solute in a solution of sugar water. |
| Solution | A type of mixture made when a solute is dissolved in a solvent. Bronze is a type of solution made of copper and tin. All solutions are homogeneous. |
| Distillation | The evaporation and subsequent collection of a liquid by condensation as a means of purification. 1.The evaporation and subsequent collection of a liquid by condensation as a means of purification: the distillation of water. |
