PROPERTIES OF MATTER

QuestionAnswer
Boiling point Temperature at which a liquid will start to become a gas.
Buoyancy The tendency of a substance to float or sink in a liquid.
Characteristic property The characteristic properties of matter include density, conductivity, solubility, freezing point, and boiling point.
Conductivity A material’s ability to transfer energy from one source to another.
Conductor A substance with high conductivity, meaning that it transfers heat well.
Density The amount of mass in a given volume of matter.
Differentiate To make a distinction between things; to tell things apart from each other
Electron A subatomic particle with a negative charge that orbits the nucleus of an atom.
Freezing point Temperature at which a liquid becomes a solid.
Gas A substance whose atoms weakly interact as they move about freely from one another and occupy any shape and fill up space.
Insulator A substance with low conductivity, meaning that it doesn’t transfer heat or electricity well.
Liquid A substance whose atoms will take the shape of the container they are in.
Mass The amount of matter an object contains.
Matter Anything that has mass, volume, that you can see, smell, feel, or taste, that’s living or nonliving, and that moves if a force is applied.
Neutron A subatomic particle with a neutral (n) charge found in the nucleus of an atom.
Phases of matter Solid, liquid, gas, and plasma; also called the “states” of matter.
Plasma Charged gaseous atoms make up this type of matter; it is the most common in the universe.
Proton A subatomic particle with a positive charge found in the nucleus of an atom.
Solid A substance whose atoms are packed so closely together that the substance appears rigid and therefore it maintains its shape.
Solubility The degree to which a substance can be dissolved in a liquid.
Subatomic particles The particles that make up an atom.
Volume Amount of space an object takes up.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
