QuestionAnswer
Describe the nine functions of the PSNS? Referred to as rest and digest functions? They are SSLUDIC, + 2 eyes Slowing of the heart, salivation, lacrimation, urination, defecation, incease gastric secretions, constracting the bronchial smooth muscle, miosis, acommodation.
List the first of three functions of the sympathetic nervous system? They are CIB. 3/5/3 1st is Cardiovascular-Regulation of the CV system, 3 functions: maintain blood flow to brain, redistribute bl flow during exercise, compensate for bl loss through vasoconstriction
name the second of the three functions of the Sympathetic Nerv System, CIB? (3 of them) 2nd is Implementing the fight or flight reaction, 5 functions: increasing heart rate and bl pressure, shunting bl from skin & viscera into the skeletal muscles, dilating the bronchi to improve O2.
name the third of the three functions of the Sympathetic nerv System, CIB? 3rd is Body temperature regulation, 3 functions: maintaining bl flow to the skin, promoting production of sweat for cooling, promoting piloerection for warmth.
Drug classification: Cholinergics (Muscarinic agonist) drugs: therapeutic uses: The primary use for Bethanecol is for patients with urinary retention. adverse affects: hypotension and bradycardia GI: causes excessive salivation, increases gastric acid, nausea, causing abdominal cramping and diarrhea
name the second of the three functions of the Sympathetic Nerv System, CIB? (the last 2) For 3rd of CIB re: Body temp: dilating pupils (miosis) to enhance visual acuity, sending stored energy providing glucose to brain and fatty acids to the muscles
an example of a cholinergic drug? What are the adverse effects of urecholine? Bethanecol chloride, Urecholine; hypotension, bradycardia, excessive salivation, increases gastric acid, nausea, causing abdominal cramping and diarrhea.
drug classification: Anti-cholinergic (Muscarinic antagonist) drugs therapeutic uses: Atropine is used for patients with bradyarrhythmias, asystole, PEA,(pulseless electrical activity) other therapeutic uses: atropine inhibits salivary and bronchial secretions. adverse effects: Ex: Atropine: tachycardia, possible paradoxical bradycardia, mild excitation, dizziness, headache.
example of two anticholinergic drugs are? what are the adverse effects of atropine? Oxybutynin, or Ditropan (Oxytrol)-used to treat overactive bladder; adversely, Atropine causes tachycardia, possible paradoxical bradycardia, mild excitation, dizziness, headache, and causes dry mouth.
cannot eat the CAT? What are the 3 characteristics of drug class Catecholomines? Catecholomines: 3 things to remember.1) they cannot be given orally, 2) brief duration of action,3) they cannot cross the blood brain barrier
3 characteristics of NON-Cats? 1)they can be taken orally 2) they have longer duration 3)they cross the blood brain barrier
What are the therapeutic uses of Catecholomines? Four They are used for patients with cardiac arrest, treatment of anaphylactic shock, asthma, bronchospasm. (EPI, Dopamine, Dobutrex)
What are the three adverse effects of Cats? HypERtensive(advERse)crisis, dysrhythmias, angina pectoris(you will get CP with high BP)
What are the therapeutic uses for Non cats? remember can be given po and IV Phenylephrine, Ephedrine(can buy po over the counter)reduces nasal congestion, and given(or IV) parentally to elevate blood pressure because of severe hypotension; AND Terbutaline can delay preterm labor.
What are the adverse effects of NON Cats? HypERtensive(advERse)crisis, dysrhythmias, angina pectoris(you will get CP with high BP)
drug classification: Alpha agonists Describe the two types of alpha agonists? drugs that activate alpha1 treat hypotension drugs that activate alpha2 treat hypertension
therapeutic uses for alpha agonists?? Alpha1 agonists: vasoconstriction in blood vessels
adverse effects of alpha agonists? Hypertensive crisis, dysrhythmias, angina pectoris
drug classification: Alpha antagonists (alpha blockers) What are the therapeutic uses for alpha blockers? BPH and for mild to moderate hypertension.
What are the adverse effects of alpha blockers?? Orthostatic hypotension, reflex tachycardia, nasal congestion, inhibition of ejaculation
drug classification: Beta2 agonists: What are the therapeutic uses for Beta2 agonists? for asthma and to delay preterm labor(Terbutaline)
What are the adverse affects of beta2 agonists? BP changes, also tachycardia or brady or uneven HR
What are the therapeutic effects of Beta Blockers(antagonists)?? angina pectoris, hypertension, cardiac dysrhythmias, MI, Heart failure, AND prevention of migraines
what are the adverse effects of Beta Blockers? Bradycardia, reduced cardiac output, precipitation of heart failure,
Give example of a drug that works as an alpha and beta blocker mix? Carvedilol, or Coreg
What are the adverse effects of atropine? an anticholinergic, it does what adversely? tachycardia, possible paradoxical brady, mild exitation, dizziness and headache
