Defense Mechanisms

rationalization providing your ego with a logical or rational reason as opposed to the real reason
repression forgetting a memory in the conscious mind by pulling it into the unconscious
denial refusing to accept the reality of something that makes you anxious
projection to believe that impulses coming from within are really coming from other people
reaction formation replacing an unacceptable feeling or urge with an opposite one
regression going back to an earlier and less mature pattern of behavior
displacement taking out impulses on an easy more accessible or less threatening target
sublimation acting out unacceptable impulses in a socially acceptable way
acting out the individual deals with emotional conflict or internal or external stressors by actions rather than reflections or feelings.
