Unit 7 science 8 vocab

QuestionAnswer
Chemical Bond A force of attraction that holds two atoms together
Valence Electrons The electrons in the outermost energy level of an atom; these electrons are involved in forming chemical bonds
Ionic Bonds The force of attraction between oppositely charged ions
Covalent Bonds The force of attraction between the nuclei of atoms and the electrons shared by the atoms
Metallic Bonds The force of attraction between a positively charged metal ion and the electrons in a metal
Ions charged particles that form during chemical changes when one or more valence electrons transfer from on atom to another
Crystal Lattice a repeating 3-dimensional pattern of ions
Molecule a neutral group of atoms held together by covalent bonds
Malleability The ability of a substance to be pounded into thin sheets
Ductility The ability of a substance to be stretched into a wire
Chemical Reactions The process by which one or more substances undergo change to produce one or more different substances
Chemical Formula A shorthand notation for a compound or diatomic element using chemical formulas and symbols
Chemical Equation A shorthand description of a chemical reaction using chemical formulas and symbols
Reactants The starting materials in a chemical reaction
Products The substances formed from a chemical reaction
Conservation of Mass Mass is neither created nor destroyed in ordinary chemical or physical changes
Synthesis Reaction A reaction in which two or more substances combine to form a single compound
Decomposition Reaction A reaction in which a single compound breaks down to form two or more simpler substances
Single-Replacement Reaction A reaction in which an element takes the place of another element in a compound; this can occur only when a more-reactive element takes the place of a less-reactive one
Double-Replacement Reaction A reaction in which ions in two compounds switch places
Exothermic Reaction A chemical reaction in which energy is released or removed
Endothermic Reaction A chemical reaction in which energy is absorbed
Activation Energy The minimum amount of energy needed for substances to react
Catalyst A substance that speeds up a reaction without being permanently changed
Inhibitor A substance that slows down or stops a chemical reaction
ion An atom that has a positive or negative charge due to the loss or gain of electrons.
decomposition A chemical reaction in which the reactants are broken apart; the chemical breakdown of a substance into simpler substances.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
