Who are most likely to be child abusers? Parents (75% of the time). physical usually mother, sexual usually father. often past victim of abuse. other relatives are more common abusers than unrelated caregivers.
Understand the links between being abused as a child and becoming an abuser as an adult Abuse is a larned pattern of behavior, so the abusr may have been raised in an abusive environment
What are risk factors for a child being abused? developmental delay (physical/mental), difficult, hyperactive, needy, not well-bonded, parent abuses drugs or is mentally ill
What are the characteristics of physical abuse? 7) "sock and glove" immersion burns
What are characteristics of incestuous adults? VICTIMS ARE AVAILABLE, Inappropriate family boundaries, confused roles, passive/sick parent, overcrowding, drug abuse
What determines how children behave in response to incestuous abuse? 1) fear, 2) they are threatened, 3) they are warned against causing family shame, 4) afraid of taboo, 5) don't know it's not normal
Understand the Texas Family Code governing reporting of Child Abuse If a profession suspects abuse, he/she must report within 48 hrs
What behavioral indications suggest that children are being abused? 1) Abnormal sexual knowledge, behaviors, & language. 2) Excessive masturbation, inserting objects into genitals, acting out sex
Which types of abuse do not have to be reported? Domestic & Sexual Assault of Adults
What are risk factors for Spousal Abuse? Women as property, Inadequate men, Crime of convenience, drugs may be used, mental deficiency/age can be taken advantage of
What are the different types of Elder Abuse? Physical/Sexual/Psychological, Neglect (physical/nutrition/medical), Exploitation, Medical
What type of men are most likely to be rapists? sadists, predators, inadequate men w/fantasies, displaced aggression, women are property, other crimes
How should family violence be dealt with at Parkland? 1) screen everyone, 2) operator pages Victim Intervention Program/Rape Crisis, 3) ask for VIP advocate. (Victims can call directly, also)
What is the incidence of neglect in reported cases of Child Abuse? 50%
