What is a tributary? a stream or river that flows into a larger stream
What is a cataract? rapids or low waterfalls
What is a wadi? a dry riverbed that fills during a rainstorm
What is a reservoir? An artificial lake created by a dam
What is a floodplain? the flat area around a river that is covered with sediment as a result of flooding; makes good farmland
What is a river mouth? the end of a river
What is a delta? the triangle shaped deposit of sediment where a river flows into the ocean
What is the water cycle? the movement of water from the surface of the Earth to the atmosphere and back again
What is infiltration? the movement of water from Earth's surface into the soil
What is runoff? water from rainfall that is not absorbed into the soil and flows into lakes
What is a river basin? the area drained by a river and its tributaries
What is a source? what a stream or river originates from
What are headwaters? streams that make up the beginning of a river
What is a confluence? flowing together or two streams
What 2 rivers join to form the main Nile? Blue and White Nile
What direction does the Nile flow? North
Describe where the Nile is in Africa. Northeast Africa; on the eastern side of the Sahara
Name at least 2 countries that the Nile goes through. Uganda, Ethiopia, Sudan, Egypt, Tanzania
What is another term for "river system"? Watershed or river basin
How does a delta form? A river drops off all of the sand and sediment it has been carrying in front of itself at the mouth of the river; then the river must push through this deposit to make its way out to the sea
