| Schema | A specific plan for knowing the world; mental representaions of the world EX:An infant sees a new block and fits it into how they stack |
| Assimilation | The process of fitting objects and experiences into one's schema. EX: The infant has stacked blocks before and puts this block into the that schema. |
| Accomodation | The adjustment of one's schemas to include newly observed events and experiences. EX: An infant sees a box and tries to use it to stack blocks but it falls into the box. The infant alters his schema for this box. |
| Object Performance | A child's realization that an objecy exists even when he or she cannot see or touch it. EX: An infant has a car and his mom puts it in a box. He still knows the car is there. |
| Representational Thought | The intellectual ability of a child to picture something in his mind. EX: A child witnesses a tantrum and they have never had one, but then imitates it later on. |
| Conservation | The principle that a given quantity does not change when its appearance is changed. EX: When you pour water from a wide jar into a tall jar, a child under 5 will say the quantity of water has changed. |
| Egocentric | A young child's inability to understand another person's perspective. EX: When a child plays hide and seek and thinks that if they can't see you, you can't see them. |
| Imprinting | Inherited tendencies that are displayed by newborn animals when they encounter new stimuli in their enviroment. EX: When a newborn goose sees a moving object, he chases after it as if it were his mother. |
| Critical Period | A specific time in development when certain skills or abilities are most easily learned. EX: Children learn to walk best when they are around 12 months old. |
