schema mental representations of the world, a specific plan for knowing the world
assimilation the process of fitting new and/or old objects and experiences into ones preexisting schemas
accomodation the adjustment of one's schemas to include newly observed events and experiences. you change it to fit the characteristics of the new object
object permanence q childs realization that an object exists even when he or she cant see or touch it. like putting a toy behind a door, they will remember the toy is there even though its not visible.
representational thought the intellectual ability of a child to picture and remember something in his or her mind.
conservation the principle that a given quality does not change when its appearence is changed. (the jar situation)
egocentric a young childs inability to understand another persons perspective
Imprinting inherited tendencies or responses that are displayed by newborn animals when they encounter new stimuli in their environment. (think of geese goslings)
critical period a specific time in devolpment when certain skills or abilities are most easily learned.
