Hypothesis A specific prediction that is tested in a scientific study-derived from theories
Scientific Method The process of evaluating tentative explanations against observable evidence-this is what makes psychology a science
Mental Processes Occurrences within an individuals mind that cannot be directly observed by others
Behavior A Person (or animals') actions and reactions that can be observed and measured by others
Theory A general scientfic explanation
Psychology The scientific study of behavior and mental processes
Data Scientific Facts-information used to test hypothesis in an investigation
Everyday Psychology Anecdotal explanations used in the course of everyday life to account for one's own behavior or that of others
What differentiates everyday psychology from scientific psychology? SP attempts to explain everything that people do-EP explains behavior that seems unique or fascinating
What make psychology a science? use of the scientific method
nonfalsifiable explanations that cannot be revised therefore unable to be disproved by any observable evidence
Free Will assumption that behavior is freely undertaken except in special cases
Determinism the assumption that all behaviors have causes
