What is fitness? Fitness is the ability to meet the everyday demands of the environment, and still have enough energy left in case of emergency
What is Health? Health is a complete state of mental, physicl, and social well-being and not just merly the absence of physical illness or infirmities.
What are some of the mental benefits of Sports? 1)Improved Confidence 2)Relief from stress and stress related illness
What are some of the physical benefits of Sports? 1)Improved Posture 2)Weight Loss 3)Improved Body Shape
What are some of the social benefits of Sports? 1)Oppurtunity to meet new people 2)Oppurtunity to make new friends 3)A sense of belonging
What are some other benefits of Sports? Co-operation – working with others. Competition – testing yourself against others. Physical challenge – testing yourself against the environment or your best performances. Aesthetic appreciation – recognizing quality of movement in a performance
What are the 9 components of fitness? Agility, Balance, Coordination, Cardiovascular Fitness/Stamina, Muscular Strength, Muscular Endurance,Speed, Flexibility, Body Composition
What is Agility? Agility is the ability to accurately and rapidly change the direction of the whole body
What is Balance? Balance is the ability to maintain equilibrium while in stationary or moving.
What is Coordination? Coordination is the ability to use senses and body parts to perform motor tasks smoothly and accurately.
What is Cardivascular Fitness/Stamina? Cardiovascular Fitness is the ability to exercise the entire body for long periods of time
What is Muscualar Strength/Power? Muscualar strength/ Power is the amount of force a muscle can exert against resistence
What is Muscular Endurance? The ability to voluntary muscles for long periods of time without becoming tired.
What is Speed? Speed is the amount of time it takes the body to perform a specific task
what is Flexibility? Flexibilty is the range of movement possible at a joint
What is Body Composition? Body Composition is the percentage of body weight which is fat, muscle and bone
What is Reaction Time? Reaction time is the amount of time it takes the body to react to stimuli
What is a drug? 1)A drug is any chemical substance that change the processes of the mind or body.
There are two types of drugs __________ and _________ Legal (Social), Illegal
What are the types of drugs? Stimulants, Hallucinogens, Narcotic Analgesic, Anabolic Agents/Steroids, Diuretics, Petides and Hormones, Alcohol, Depressants
What are the types of drugs commonly used in sport and there uses? Stimulants-Make athletes more alert and mask fatigue Anabolic agents/steroids-Help athletes to train harder and build muscle Diuretics- Remove fluid from the body. Used to mask the weight, eg in boxing to hide other drug use
What are some other types of drugs commonly used in sports and their uses? Narcotic analgesics-Mask pain caused by injury or fatigue which can make the injury worse Peptides and hormones EPO (Erythropoietin) red blood cells - gives more energy HGH (Human Growth Hormone) - build muscle
What is doping? Doping is the use of performance enhancement drugs
What are social Drugs? Social drugs are usually taken to help people relax, or on occasion to give a feeling of having more energy. Some are banned in many sports and are also illegal
What are the main social drugs? Nicotine, Caffeine, Alcohol, Amphetamines, Cannabis, and Stimulants
What are the effects of Nicotine? addictive and found in cigarettes, cigars and tobacco reduces lung capacity – bad for stamina events risk of heart disease and lung cancer
What are the effects of Caffeine? found in coffee, chocolate and 'energy' drinks a mild stimulant causing tiredness unless taken repeatedly
What are the effects of Alcohol? reduces concentration and coordination risk of liver damage (cirrhosis)
What are the effects of Cannabis? reduces concentration and coordination reduces lung capacity – bad for stamina events risk of heart disease and lung cancer illegal
What are the effects of Stimulants? eg amphetamines a banned doping class and illegal
What is a balanced diet? A balance diet is one that contains the correct proportion carbohydrates, proteins, minerals, fats, water, vitamin, fibre
What are Carbohydrates used for? Carbohydrates are used as a source of energy
What is fibre used for? Fibre is used to help the intestines function properly and to help you feel filled, so you eat less
What are proteins used for? Proteins are required for growth and repair, to build muscles, as a source of energy
What are fats used for? Fats are used to insulate us against the cold, and for energy
What are minerals used for? Minerals help release release energy from food
What are vitamins used for? Vitamins help the body work
What is water used for? Water is used to help maintain the fluid levels
What are some the track and field events? Shot put, Javelin, Discus, Long Jump, High Jump, Pole Vault, Hurdling
What is teamwork? Cooperative work done by a group of people working together
