If, then... 1 If the egg is fertilized, then the lining of the uterus stays thick and the menstrual cycle stops during pregnancy. (Remember, the egg can be fertilized anytime in a multi day time period, which is around 7 days in humans.
If, then... 2 If the egg is not fertilized, then the lining of the uterus is not needed.
If, then... 2 AFTER - The lining of the uterus thins -Blood is released in the uterus -Gravity pulls the blood through the vagina and out of the body. [in human females the bleeding lasts 4-7 days and is commonly called the period]
Step 1 As an egg matures in an ovary, the lining of the uterus thickens with blood filled tissue.
Step 2 when a mature egg is released from an ovary (ovulation), the lining of the uterus continues to thicken
Step 3 As the egg travels through a fallopian tube, the lining of the uterus continues to thicken
Step 4 the cycle starts over
