Fire Alarm System

QuestionAnswer
What is a Fire Alarm Control Panel? Provides Power and Monitor Circuit Integrity
What are the two types of initiating devices? Manual (Pull Station, Guard Tours) Automatic (Smoke, Heat, Waterflow, Flame detector)
What are the three types of notification appliances? Audible (Bell, Horn, Chime) Visible (Strobe) Tactile/Olfactory(Bed Shaker, Smoke)
What are two types of transmitters and receivers? DACT(Dialer)/DACR(Receiver) - Digital Alarm Communicator McCulloh - Copper Wires
Are the two fire alarm control functions? Elevator recall Fan Shutdown
What does the NFPA 72 cover? Application, Installation, Location, Performance, and Maintnenance of fire alarm systems and their components.
Where does a fire alarm initiate from? Manual Fire Alarm boxes or automatic fire detectors and sensors.
What is the Fire Alarm Control Unit? System Controller that provides power to the system and electrically monitors all circuits extending from it. It Switches power to notification appliances, building fire safety controls, and supplement equipment based upon input from initiating devices.
NFPA 72 requires how many power supplies? At least two independent and reliable power supplies are required, one primary and one secondary.
What are the three initiating device types? Conventional Conventional-Addressable Analog-Addressable
How long after the activation of an initiating device does the actuation of alarm, fire safety functions, and notifications need to occur? They are to occur within 10 seconds after the activation of an initiating device.
A coded alarm signal consists of how many complete rounds of the number transmitted? Three or more
How many impulses are in each round? Three or more
What is a conventional detector? Transmits the alarm by increasing current on the circuit. (By circuit not by device)
What is a conventional-Addressable detector? Transmits the alarm by code. (By device not by circuit)
What is a Analog-Addressable detector? Reduce individual detectors to sensors, allowing the fire alarm control panel to decide whether an alarm condition exists. (By device not by circuit)
How is the Fire Alarm Control Unit(s) protected? By automatic smoke detection or by automatic heat detection when ambient conditions prohibit smoke detectors.
Open and Ground Fault conditions in installation conductors and their restoration are to be indicated within how many seconds? 200 seconds
A record of completion is the responsibility of... A qualified and experience person described in NFPA-72 4.3.3
How long are the complete, unalterable record of tests and operations kept? 1 year after the next test.
How can records be archived? By any means as long as hard copies are available when requested.
How are records kept for off-premises monitoring? Records at the supervising station are to be kept for atleast a year.
What is used to determine the level of fault tolerance in initiating, notification, and signaling line circuits? Class or Style or both
What is a Class A circuit? Circuit capable of transmitting an alarm signal during a single open or non-simultaneous single ground fault.
What is a Class B circuit? Circuit not capable of transmitting an alarm beyond the location of a single open or non-simultaneous single ground fault.
An initiating device circuit is permitted to be described as a Style A,B,C,D, or E depending upon what? Depends on its fault tolerance during a single open, single ground, wire-to-wire short, and loss of carrier fault condition
A notification appliance circuit is permitted to be designated as a Style W,X,Y, or Z depending upon what? Depends on its fault tolerance during a single open, single ground, wire-to-wire short, and loss of carrier fault condition.
Signaling Line circuit is permitted to be designated as a Style 0.5,1,2,3,3.5,4,4.5,5,6,or7 depending upon what? Depends on its fault tolerance during a single open, single ground, wire-to-wire short, and loss of carrier fault condition.
NFPA 101 Life Safety Code indentifies... minimum criteria required for the desing of egress facilities permitting prompt escape of occupants from buildings or into safe areas within buildings.
When will the AHJ be notified if the fire alarm system or automatic sprinkler system is out of service? If they are out of service for 4 hours within 24-hour period and then the AHJ will evacuate the building or an approved fire watch will be provided.
For the purpose of annunciation, what is considered a zone? Each floor of a building is considered a zone except when the floor area exceeds 20,000 sq ft or 300 ft.
When can a zone exceed the 20,000 sq ft or 300 feet requirement? When a automatic sprinkler system is installed throughout the area and installed in accordance to the NFPA 101 then the area of the zone can coincide with the allowable area of a sprinkler zone.
