Ginseng on Cold & flu Not direct effect but helps to bring back to normal stage. American =Panax (hot) and Siberian ginsing (DO NOT TAKE)- Acitve constituents- ginesenosides which increase macrophages, NK cells, decrease PLT, vasodialates, antioxident, hypoglycemic
Astragalus Considered an adaptogen, treats qi insufficiency (weakness, fatigue, apathy) increases NK activity and IL, in mice shown improvement of renal carcinoma extended 3-17 years
Omega 3 Fish oils Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) + Docosahexenoic acid (DHA) and n-3 polyensaturated FA's in Rodents shown to decrease lymphocyte proliferation and inhibit NK activity- Mice shows mixed results, Human-DHA decrease T-lymphocyte activity will decrease TG with 3g
Andrographis -Kan Jan Standardized to 4-5.6mg Indicated for COLD only, may decrease symptoms by 2 days start w/in 72 hours of symptoms. Takes 4-5 days for symptom relief, DOES NOT HELP COUGH
Elderberry or Sambucol 60mL QD x 3 May help the Flu (do not eat berries-toxic)
Oscillococcinum-wild duck heart and liver Homeopathic source of influenza, may reduce symptoms by 6 hours- DONT WASTE YOUR MONEY
Vitamin C treatment 2-3g reduces symptoms by 1.5 days, dose to diarrhea used by naturopaths (4-18g).
Levels if Vitamin C in phagocytes and lymphocytes is 100 fold greater than in other plasma cells, shows protection against ROS during viral infection (stress)
Zinc for Cold prevention Mixed studies, can mix with Citric acid, mannitol, sorbital= chelates. Cause unplesant taste, take as soon as you feel cold coming on.
Zicam- Zinc gluconate Spray or swabs. Spray may cause anosmia. NOT RECOMMENDED

Immunomodulators Bifidobacteria, echinacea, lactobacillus, yogurt
Kidney and bladder tea Asparagus, , parsley, goldenrod, Java tea, stinging nettle, lovage
IFlora (lactobacillus and bifidobacteria) The do not work well but are normal flora of the UT Do 3 things 1. Competive inhibition 2. bacterial cidal effects 3. Immune stimulatory
Cranberry MOA Prevents the adhesion of bacteria to bladder mucosa, it is a Proanthrocyanidins that wrap around the E. coli (PREVENTION ONLY)- Dilute it
Cancer and Coriolus Mushroom ($$$) Contains polysaccharide kreskin (PSK) improves response and survival, works like INF, IL-2 to boost the immune system. Beta glucan- anti-tumor activity, D-fraction (beta glucan) most potent activates NK cells and IL-1 and T-cells
