Static Electricity
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Electric charge | Protons carry a positive charge, electrons carry a negative charge, and an object with an equal amount of protons and neurons are neutral |
| Coulombs | The measure of an electric charge. Equal to the charge of 6.24 billion billion electrons |
| Static electricity | Simplest form of electricity |
| Electrostatics | The study of the nature, behavior and uses of static electricity |
| Law of electric charge | States that unlike charges attract each other while like charges repel each other |
| Coulombs law of electric force | States that the electric force is directly related to the strength of the charges and inversely related to the square distance between them |
| Grounding | The process of diverting unwanted electric charge directly into the earth |
| Electroscope | Constructed by William Gilbert. Used to measure static electricity |
| Ions | Charged atoms |
| Lightning rod | A pointed metal rod fastend on top of a building and connected by thick cables to metal plates buried in the earth |
| Van de Graaff generator | An electrostatic generator capable of producing enough static electricity to simulate lightning. Created by Robert J. Van de Graaff |
| Electrostatic precipitator | Uses static electricity to clean the air we breathe |
