QuestionAnswer
1b. What, if any "juice" is secreted by an organ? What does it do? Salivary glands-saliva-enzymes-starch pores in wall of stomach-juice-enzymes-protien (enzymes need acid in juice to work)
1c. what are the 3 overall funcions of the digestive system? 1. Breaks down food into molecules. 2. Molecules are absorbed into the blood and carried throughout the body. 3. Wastes are eliminated from body.
1d. Why is the digestive system considered a system? It has multiple organs, that work together to feed cells.
2a. 1. Where do phiscall changes take place? 2. Where do chemical changes take place? 1. Mouth 2. Mouth, Stomach, sm. Intestine
2b. what are the brake down products of 1. starch 2. protien 3. fat 1.sugar 2. amino acids 3. sm. fat drops
2c. what is absorbtion? Where does it take place for 1.sugar 2. amino acids 3. sm. fat drops 4. Water Absortion is when nutients move from on eplace, to another 1. sm. intestine 2. sm.intestine 3. sm. intestine 4. lg intestine
2d. what organs does food not pass through? (accesory organs) Salivary glands, Pancreas, liver, gallbladder, appendix
2e. How is our digestive system like a car wash? things (acessory organs) secreate (release) "juice" into the main tube (tracts organs)
3a. what role does saliva play in the mouth? It contains enzymes that start to break up starch molecules
3b. Why is each tooth well designed for what is does? Incisors:scissor like;cut food canines:pointy;shred meat pre-molars:flat/points;shred foos canines:flat;grind food
4a. what is a phiscally change? a change where the apperance is changed (in the mouth)
4b. What is a chemical change? A mulecular change (starch -> sugar)
5a. what are enzymes? How are they important to other cells? An enzyme is a protien that controls chemical reacions. They are important to cells, because the feed them. enzymes break up food into molecules (starch->sugar)
5b. do some enzymes need spiecal conditions in order to work? yes, For example, enzmes in stomach, need acid found in stomach juice.
6a. Describe the structure of the stomach. Relate structure to function. 1. The stomach is a pouch that is 2. covered with a thick mucus covering. 3. The walls are lined with smooth muscle, so 4. it can stretch. 1. pouch=stores food 2. mucus=protection from acid 3. smooth muscle=stretch 4. sretch= hold more
6b. describe Dr.Beaumonts observations about the stomach. -thick mucus lining -looked like raw egg yolk -pores secreted juice when food was present -juice contains acid
8. describe the structure of the small intestine. relate structure to function. 1. it is a long tube 2. it's surface contains thousand of fingerlike progections called villi 1. long=can absorb/hold lots of food/nutrients 2. villi=more surface area 3. more surface ares=more absorbtion.
9a. what is diffusion? diffusion is the movement of molecules from a place of high concentration to a place of low concentration. Molecules move through tiny holes.
9b. Define Concentration How many _____ per _____ Example: 3 sugar molecules per 1 water molecule
9c. Define permeability if something is peremable to something, it menas that it con move through it Example, dyalisis tubing is permeable to sugar (sugar can move through dyalisis tubing)
10a. why do bodu systems need the digestive system? for food, all cells need food (brain cells, bone cellls, blood cells)
10b. Why does the digestive system need other body systems? muscular system (stomach, sm/lg intestine)
11. Explain how this statement is true "as it travels through the digestive tract, food is never really inside the body" Food just goes down one laong pipe (mouth, esophagus, sm intestine, lg intestine anus) it never goes anywhere.
12. What does the liver do? What are the affects on it when eating a high fat diet? -produces bile -filters out toxic ssubstances high fat diet: liver turns to fat, stops working
