Theory of Magnetism
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Protons neutrons | Particles that make up the nucleus |
| Electrons | A particle that orbits the nucleus. Spin produces magnetic field. Two of these put together will cancel out the magnetic field |
| Domain | A group of aligned atoms with a single magnetic field |
| Domain theory | States that magnetic substances are substances whose atoms line up to form magnetic domains |
| Ferromagnetic substances | Some substances that have several unpaired electrons, making them strongly attracted to magnets. Cobalt and nickel |
| Temporary magnet | A combination of magnetic substances |
| Permanent magnets | Magnets made from magnetically hard materials |
| Magnetization by contact | Magnetization of an object by touching it with another magnet |
| Magnetization by induction | Magnetization by bringing the object within a magnetic field |
| Electromagnets | Magnets that use electrical flows. Loses most of its magnetism when current is turned off |
| Superconductors | Special materials that allow electricity to flow through them unimpeded |
| Maglev train | Train that uses magnets to float on a magnetic field |
