QuestionAnswer
Central Nervous System The brain and spinal cord.
Peripheral Nervous System The nervous system outside of the brain and spinal cord.
Afferent Nerves A nerve that carries impulses toward the central nervous system (CNS).
Efferent Nerves A nerve that carries impulses away from the central nervous system (CNS).
Motor Nervous System Controls skeletal muscle contractions.
Autonomic Nervous System The autonomic nervous system regulates key functions of the body including the activity of the heart muscle (see below), the smooth muscles (e.g., the muscles of the intestinal tract), and the glands.
Neuron A nerve cell that sends and receives electrical signals over long distances within the body.
Synapse The point of connection usually between two nerve cells
Neurotransmitters A chemical that is released from a nerve cell which thereby transmits an impulse from a nerve cell to another nerve, muscle, organ, or...
Norepinephrine A substance, both a hormone and neurotransmitter, secreted by the adrenal medulla and the nerve endings of the sympathetic nervous system to cause vasoconstriction and increases in heart rate, blood pressure, and the sugar level of the blood.
Acetylcholine A white crystalline derivative of choline that is released at the ends of nerve fibers in the somatic and parasympathetic nervous systems and is involved in the transmission of nerve impulses in the body.
Chrolinergic Fibers The nerve endings that liberate acetylcholine.
Adrenergic Fibers Activated by or capable of releasing epinephrine or an epinephrinelike substance, especially in the sympathetic nervous system. Having physiological effects similar to those of epinephrine.
Cholinergic Agents stimulated, activated, or transmitted by choline (acetylcholine); said of the sympathetic and parasympathetic nerve fibers that liberate acetylcholine at a synapse when a nerve impulse passes. an agent that produces such an effect.
Adrenergic Agents activated by, characteristic of, or secreting epinephrine or related substances, particularly the sympathetic nerve fibers that liberate norepinephrine at a synapse when a nerve impulse passes. any agent that produces such an effect
Anticholinergic Agents An agent that is antagonistic to the action of parasympathetic or other cholinergic nerve fibers.
Adrenergic Blocking Agents Inhibit the adrenergic agents.
Catecholamines a group of substances derived from tyrosine that act as hormones to stimulate cellular activity and carry nerve impulses through the body.
Alpha Receptor in response to sympathomimetic stimuli
Beta Receptor which block sympathomimetic activity

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
