| Teratogen | any environmental factor that causes a birth defect (abnormality present at birth) |
| Malignant | refers to a tumor or neoplasm that is capable of metastasizing or spreading to new tissues (that is, cancer) |
| Cancer | tumor (neoplasm) capable of metastasizing (spreading) to other parts of the body |
| Benign | refers to a tumor or neoplasm that does metastasize or spread to different tissues |
| Carcinogenic | any substance, radionuclide, or radiation that is an agent directly involved in causing cancer |
| Cytotoxic agent | the quality of being toxic to cells. (e.g. from the puff adder brown recluse spider). |
