| Structuralist | a psychologist who studied the basic elements that make up concious mental experiences. Wilhelm Wundt was very interested in this method of psychology. |
| Introspection | created by Wilhelm Wundt, it is a method of self-observation in which participants report their thoughts and feelings. |
| Functionalist | a psychologist who studied the function (rather than the structure) of consciousness. William James studied this type of psychology. Functionalists use this to see how people and animals adpat to their enviroment. |
| Psychoanalyst | a psychologist who studies how unconcious motives and conflicts determine behavior. Sigmund Freud studied this type of psychology. He often would ask people to say whatever came to their mind no matter how absurd or irrelevant. |
| Behaviorist | a psychologist who analyzes how organisms learn or modify their behavior based on their response to the enviroment. They often stressed investigating observable behavior.Ivan Pavalov and John B. Watson were psychologists who studied this. |
| Humanist | a psychologist who believes that each person has freedom in directing his or her future and achieving personal growth. Abraham Maslow, Carl Rogers, and Rollo May were a humanist. They said the enviroment was a background to internal growth. |
| Cognitivist | a psychologist who studies how we process, store, retireve, and use information and how cognitive processes influence our behavior such as language, thinking, problem solving, and creativity. |
| Structuralist | a psychologist who studies how physical and chemical changes in our bodies influence our behavior. They often study how the brain, the nervous system, hormones, and genetics influence our behavior. |
