RESEARCH METHOD
NATANSON EXAM 1:RES/METH 2011 SPRING
Question | Answer |
---|---|
experiment | research that can identify cause-effect relationships by manipulating variables |
control condition | used for comparison; is exposed to the same experimental environment but IS NOT given the treatment |
independent variables | are deliberately manipulated to determine if they cause change in the dependent variable |
dependent variables | factors or conditions measured at the end of an experiment presumed to vary as a result of the independent vary |
random assignment | all subjects have equal chance of being assigned to experimental or control conditions |
operational definitions | precise statements of the procedures (operations) used to define research variables |
Statistically Significant | Term used to describe research results when the outcome of research indicates the probability the results occurred by chance is minute |
Correlation coefficient | a measure of how much two factors vary together and thus how well either factor predicts the other |
positive correlation | A relationship between two variables in which both variables move in the same direction |
Negative correlation | a relationship where the two variables move in opposite directions |
survey | Interviews or questionnaires are used to gather information |
random selection | every member of population has a chance of being included in random sample |
sample | subgroups of interest that mirror the population |
social desirability bias | tendency of respondents to reply in a manner that will be viewed favorably by others |
naturalistic observation | behavior is studied in natural setting without influencing or controlling it |
Case study | individuals or small groups are studied in great depth also rare events |
Descriptive statistics purpose | to describe data |
mean | arithmetic average |
median | the middle score in a distribution; half the scores are above it and half are below it |
Mode | most frequently occurring score in a distribution |
standard deviation | measures average variability from mean |
