experiment research that can identify cause-effect relationships by manipulating variables
control condition used for comparison; is exposed to the same experimental environment but IS NOT given the treatment
independent variables are deliberately manipulated to determine if they cause change in the dependent variable
dependent variables factors or conditions measured at the end of an experiment presumed to vary as a result of the independent vary
random assignment all subjects have equal chance of being assigned to experimental or control conditions
operational definitions precise statements of the procedures (operations) used to define research variables
Statistically Significant Term used to describe research results when the outcome of research indicates the probability the results occurred by chance is minute
Correlation coefficient a measure of how much two factors vary together and thus how well either factor predicts the other
positive correlation A relationship between two variables in which both variables move in the same direction
Negative correlation a relationship where the two variables move in opposite directions
survey Interviews or questionnaires are used to gather information
random selection every member of population has a chance of being included in random sample
sample subgroups of interest that mirror the population
social desirability bias tendency of respondents to reply in a manner that will be viewed favorably by others
naturalistic observation behavior is studied in natural setting without influencing or controlling it
Case study individuals or small groups are studied in great depth also rare events
Descriptive statistics purpose to describe data
mean arithmetic average
median the middle score in a distribution; half the scores are above it and half are below it
Mode most frequently occurring score in a distribution
standard deviation measures average variability from mean
