Chloroquine SE N/V, diarrhea, GI, pruritis, HA, visual disturbances, confusion, fatigue
Quinidine SE QT prolongation, Cinchinism (flush, sweaty, HA, vertigo)
Leishmaniasis pathogens L.braziliensis, L.mexicana transmission via ingestion into dog, squirrel and mosquito bites and then human gets a bite
Leishmaniasis presntation Can be viseral stomach, cutaneous skin lesions or Mucocutaneous
Treatment of leishmaniasis Stilbogluconate sodium from the CDC (intergeres with glycolysis, FA oxidation ion glycosomes)
SE of Stibogluconate sodium Injection site reaction, muscle pain, thrmbocytopenia
Entamoeba Histolytica pathogen A one cell amoeba that lives in the colon and can cause lesions and necrosis
Treatment of entamoeba histolytica Paromomycin, lodoquinol, Diloxanide furoate. If Systemic- Metronidazole, tetracycline, chlorquine
Giardia Lamblia characteristics Most common intestinal disorder protoza is from contaminated water of food
Treatment of Girdia Lamblia metronidazole 250mg TID 7 days
Protozan infections are Malaria, Leishmaniasis, Entamoeba histlytica, Giardia
Helminthes infections are Necator americanus (hook), Ascariasis (round worm), Enterobiasis (round pinworm)
Necator americanus characteristics Found more in the southeastern US- via contiminated food or skin penetration Treat with Mebendazole 100mg PO BID x3 days
Ascariasis (roundworm) Found in the gulf coast states and Appalachian Females are 20-35cm can migriate to lungs Treatment with Mebendasole 100mg PO BID x 3
Mebendazole MOA Inhibits tubulin synthesis this inhibits glucose uptake and larval development
Enterobiasis (round pinworm) Characteristics Most common & in children affected perianal can test with scotch tape Treated with Pryrantel pamoate, mebendazole, Abendazole
Pyrantel pamoate MOA Neuromuscular blocker
Prophylatic treatment to prevent malaria is DEET spray, Chlorquine, mefloquibe, doxycycline, Atovaquone + proguanile
