Puritans 1500s: society was going to hell, preferred feudalism, cities, commercial activity, and individualistic behavior, but only their way=right.
Predestination and the Elect At birth or later, a person can be chosen by G-d to become someone who receives divine salvation. Since you cannot tell if you are amongst the elect, everyone should act saintly. The devil is the ACTIVE antithesis to G-d.

Red Scare/McCarthy Trials 1950s House of Un-American Activities Committee: Communist beliefs were being spread via mass media; "Hollywood 10". Joseph McCarthy claimed to have a list of 200+ Communists in the gov.
The Salem Witch Trials allowed for: neighbors with grudges against each other, and/or land-lust to accuse each other of witchcraft.
Why did Arthur Miller write The Crucible? Arthur Miller connected the Salem Witch Trials and the Red Scare/McCarthy Trials and he felt a desire to tell people the significance of his connections.
Crucible definition a container of metal or refractory material employed for heating substances to high temperatures.
