Science Flash Cards on Earthquakes

QuestionAnswer
What causes earthquakes? The sudden movement of rock along a fault.
Earthquakes occur along faults. Blocks of rock here do what? Stick then break free.
Where do earthquakes occur (what part of the Earth)? WHY do they occur there? Earthquakes occur in the lithosphere and not the asthenosphere because it is hard and rigid.
How do rocks move in a normal fault? Vertically.
How do rocks move in a reverse fault? Vertically.
How do rocks move in a strike-slip fault? Horizontally.
Where are faults located? Along what? Faults are located along tectonic plate boundaries.
Define epicenter. The point on Earth's surface directly above the focus.
Define focus. The point underground where rocks first begin to move.
Which of the three types of waves are FASTEST? Primary waves.
What can primary waves travel through? Solids, Liquids, and Gases. (Everything)
What CAN'T secondary waves travel through? Liquids and Gases.
Which out of the three types of waves cause the most damage? Surface Waves.
What THREE things do seismograms help scientists learn about earthquakes? Focus, epicenter, and magnitude.
How many seismograms are needed to pinpoint the exact location of an earthquake? Three.
