Expansion and Heat Transfer
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Thermostat | A device that automatically regulates temperature, has bimetallic strip that responds to temperature changes, first created by Cornelius Drebbel |
| Conduction | The transfer of heat through materials |
| Radiation | The transfer of heat (or energy) through space in the form of electromagnetic waves, may pass through an object without heating it |
| Convection | The transfer of heat through circulating currents |
| Sir Humphry Davy | English scientist who created miner's safety lamp in 1815 |
| Convection currents | The currents within the liquid caused by heated fluid rising and cooler fluid sinking |
| Greenhouse effect | When the suns rays travel through glass or clear plastic to increase heat, trapping radiant heat |
| Radiator | A device which radiates heat |
| expansion joint | gaps in the road of bridges which allow them to expand in warm weather and contract in cold weather |
| maximum density of water | 4 degrees celsius, no more contraction possible |
| dewar flask | Sir James Dewar invented this vacuum bottle which became our thermos. eliminates heat loss by convection |
| hot-water heating | warm a room by convection currents, use a radiator |
| forced-air heating | warm a room with a burner, fan and ducts |
