Science - Solution
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| What is a solution? | It is a mixture of solute and solvent. |
| What is a solvent? | It is a liquid that dissolves other substance. |
| What is a solute? | It is a substance that dissolves in a liquid. |
| List some properties of solution. | The properties are -It can be seen through. -Could be coloured/colourless. -Nothing leaves in the filter paper when it passes through a filter paper. |
| What is a suspension? | It is a mixture of liquid with undissolved particles. |
| Give some examples of a suspension. | Orange juice, muddy water, correction fluid. |
| What is solubility? | The maximum amount of solute that can dissolve in a solvent. |
| What can affect solubility? | Temperature, the surface area, type of solute and type of solvent. |
| What can we do to make a solid dissolve faster in water? | Increase the solvent temperature, crush the solute into small pieces or stir the solvent. |
| What does saturated solution means? | When no more solute can dissolve in the solvent. |
| How do we measure how acidic or alkali a substance is? | By using an indicator. |
| What is an indicator? | It is a substance that are one colour in acids and another in an alkali. |
| State the colour of the litmus paper in (a) acidic (b) alkali. | (a) Red (b)Blue |
| What pH values do acids, alkali and pure water have? | pH1-7 , 7-14 , 7 |
| What are the properties of acid? | -It has sour taste. -It neutralises alkali. -The lower the pH value the substance is, the more corrosive the substance is. |
| What are the properties of alkali? | -It has bitter taste. -Feel slippery. -Higher the pH values of alkali can be corrosive, such as sodium hydroxide. -It neutralises acid. |
| What is the process called when an acid and an alkali react together? | Neutralisation. |
| What are the differences between acid and alkali? | Taste : sour vs bitter, Feel : burning vs slippery, pH : low vs high, |
| What is an acid? | A substance having a sour taste and turns litmus paper red. |
| What is an alkali? | A substance having a bitter taste and turns litmus paper blue. |
| What are common laboratory acids? | Hydrochloric acid, sulphuric acid and nitric acid. |
| What are common laboratory alkali? | Sodium hydroxide, calcium hydroxide and ammonia solution. |
