Simple Machine Unit

Mrs. Brandt's 8th Grade Science

QuestionAnswer
- What is the work output of a machine divided by the work input? efficiency
-What is the ratio of output force to input force; tells you how much the machine multiplies the input force? Mechanical Advantage
-What device does work with only one movement? Simple Machine
-What is the force that you apply to a simple machine? input (effort) force
-What is the device that is made up of more than one simple machine? compound machine
-What is the force that simple machines apply to an object? output (resistance) force
-What do simple machines make easier? work
-What is the pivot point of a lever? fulcrum
-How is a block easier to lift using the fixed pulley? changes the direction of the force needed to move an object
-What is an inclined plane? a slanted surface that is used to raise an object
-What is a lever? a bar that is free to pivot about a fixed point
-What is a wedge? It is an inclined plane with one or two sloping sides used for cutting or prying.
-What is a screw? It is an inclined plane wrapped around a cylinder post.
-Name the 6 simple machines. lever, pulley, wheel and axle, wedge, inclined plane, screw
-Describe the block and tackle. It is an arrangement of pulleys designed to greatly reduce the effort force.
-Name the two simple machines that are in a pencil sharpener. wheel and axle & wedge
-Most machines require a small input force over a large input distance to get what? A large force over a small distance
-Why is the amount of work output from a machine never as large as the work put into the machine? friction
-If the mechanical advantage of a machine is 4, what is the output force? The machine multiplies the input force by 2.
-Name three ways that machines make work seem easier. increasing the output force, increasing the input distance, changing direction or changing the speed
-Why does adding oil to the moving parts of a machine increase its efficiency? It lessens the friction and gets more work out and more force out.
-Why is it easier to pry a nail out of a board with long handled hammer than with a short handled hammer? Because there is a bigger mechanical advantage.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
