Attribution theory – How do people explain the behavior of others and their own behavior
situational Cause of the behavior attributed to external factors, such as delays, the action of others, or some other aspect of the situation
dispositional Cause of the behavior attributed to internal factors such as personality character
Consistency ex – Are you always late or are you late only today.
Distinctiveness – Is it only this situation that we see this behavior or in all situations
Consensus ex – Do other students find the class boring?
Fundamental attribution error Tendency of people to overestimate the influence of another person’s internal characteristics on behavior and underestimate the influence of the situation.
Self serving bias The tendency to make personal attributions for success and situational attribution for failures
Self serving prophecy – When people’s erroneous expectations leads them to act toward others in a way that brings about the expected behaviors, thereby conforming their original impressions.
Cognitive dissonance Form new cognitions to justify their behavior, reduced by justifying, blaming, and denying
