Statistical definition of abnormal behavior Frequently occurring behavior is normal and behavior that is rare is abnormal.
Social norm deviance Something that goes against the norms or standards of a society in which an individual lives
Situational context the social or environmental setting of a person
Reliability There should high levels of agreement in diagnostic decisions
Validity should capture the essential features of the various disorders
Agoraphobia fear of being in a place or situation from which escape is difficult of impossible
Magnification – the tendency to interpret situations as far more dangerous, harmful, or important than they actually are
Clinical depression when the frequency, intensity, and duration of depressive symptoms are out of proportion to the person’s life situation.
Dysthymia a moderate depression that lasts for 2 years or more and is typically a reaction to some external stressor
Cyclothymia – disorder that consists of mood swings from moderate depression to hypomania (episodes of elation) and lasts two years or more
Flat affect a lack of emotional responsiveness
