Fibric Acid Derivatives

| Mechanism | Increased lipoprotein lipase activity which leads to increased catabolism of VLDL. May also: Suppress lipolysis in adipose tissue. Decrease free fatty acid flux. Lower the rate of triglyceride synthesis. Decrease TG 20-50%. Increase HDL 15-35%. |
| Adverse effects | Hepatotoxicity Cholelithiasis Fatigue Rash Atrial fibrillation Abdominal pain Nausea/vomiting Anemia Increased glucose Rhabdomyolysis Decreased renal function |
| Monitoring | Lipid profile. Gemfibrozil. CBC q3months for 12 months. LFTs at baseline, 6 weeks, 12 weeks, and twice yearly thereafter. |
| Drug Interactions | Statins. (Except for Fenofibric Acid). Increased risk of rhabdomyolysis. Warfarin. Increased anticoagulation response. |
