Mr. Ds Density Test

Density and Matter

Define temperature The vibration of particles.
How do you calculate the density of a material? Density = mass / volume
When two materials are added together how can you tell which will float and which will sink? The higher density material will always sink.
Matter Anything that contains both mass and volume
three phases of matter solid, liquid, and gas
Solid state of matter with a fixed volume and shape.
Liquid state of matter with a defined volume but will take the shape of its container.
Gas state of matter with no fixed volume or shape.
Solid molecules Tightly packed molecules with slight vibrations.
Liquid molecules Loosely packed molecules and able to slide over one another.
Gas molecules Molecules are far apart with little attraction to each other.
Evaporation Phase change from a liquid to a gas.
Condensation Phase change from a gas to a liquid.
Melting Phase change from a solid to a liquid.
Freezing Phase change from a liquid to a solid.
Exothermic Releases heat during a phase change.
Endothermic Gains heat during a phase change.
Define Heat The vibration of particles
Similarity between heat and temperature They both deal with the vibrations of particles
Difference between heat and temperature Temperature can stop changing while heat is always changing.
What are the states/phases of matter? solid, liquid, and gas
What is density? a ratio of mass to volume; the number of atoms or particles in a space.
What is volume? the space an object takes up
What is mass? the amount of matter or particles an object contains
What is weight? the force of gravity acting on an object
What is a difference between mass and weight? mass never changes but weight changes with gravity
What is a similarity between mass and weight? both are the same on earth
Does changing the size of material change its density? no, density is ratio regardless of the size, the ratio of mass:volume always stays the same.
What determines if something sinks or floats? density determines if something sinks or floats; if the density is higher than the material it is in, it will sink.
