QuestionAnswer
Heat Thermal energy that is transferred from one place to another
Exothermic Giving off heat because of a chemical change
Endothermic Requires heat for a chemical change
Chemical change A change that produces one or more new substances
Temperature How hot or cold a substance or object is; a measure of the average kinetic energy of the particles in a substance
Thermometer An instrument for measuring temperature
Degrees Celsius (°C) Water freezes at 0° C and boils at 100° C
Degrees Fahrenheit (°F) A unit of measurement for temperature, abbreviated as F. At sea level, water freezes at 32°F and boils at 212° F
Kelvin (K) A unit of measurement for temperature on the Kelvin scale
Kelvin scale A temperature scale where absolute zero theoretically indicates that no thermal energy is present; 0 K = -273°C
Joule A unit of measurement for energy, abbreviated as J; the amount of work required to lift a 110-g mass a distance of about 1 m
Specific heat The heat required to raise the temperature of 1 g of a substance 1°C
Conduction The transfer of thermal energy by direct contact
Convection The transfer of thermal energy by the movement of a fluid, such as water or air
Geothermal energy Energy that comes from the natural internal heat of Earth
Chemical reaction A process in which a new substance or substances are formed when atoms from the original substance or substances are rearranged
Combustion Any type of burning, usually a fuel with oxygen
Pollutant A harmful substance that is added to an environment
Photosynthesis The process by which plants transform the energy from sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide to form sugars and oxygen
Respiration The process by which stored energy is released from sugar by combining with oxygen to form carbon dioxide and water
Calorie A unit of energy used to describe the amount of energy in food, also called a kilocalorie

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
