| alkali metal | one of the elements of group one of the periodic table (lithium, sodium, potassium, rubidium, cesium, and francium.) |
| alkaline-earth metal | one of the elements of group two of the periodic table (berylium, magnesium, calcuim, strontium, and radium.) |
| halogen | one of the elements from group seven-teen of the periodic table (fluorine, chlorine, bromine, iodine, and astatine); halogens combine with most metals to form salts. |
| noble gas | one of the elements of group eight-teen of the periodic table (helium, neon, argon, krpton, xenon, and radon); noble gases are unreactive. |
