Matter in Motion
unit 2 science vocabulary
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Motion | an object’s change in position over time when compared with a reference point |
| Speed | the rate at which an object moves; speed depends on the distance traveled and the time taken to travel that distance |
| Velocity | the speed of an object in a particular direction |
| Acceleration | the rate at which velocity changes; an object accelerates if its speed changes, if its direction changes, or if both its speed and direction change |
| Frame of Reference | the point of view from which you observe the object in motion |
| Force | a push or pull; all forces have both size and direction |
| Newton | (N) the SI unit of force |
| Net Force | the force that results from combining all the forces exerted on an object |
| Balance Force | forces on an object that cause the net force to be zero; balanced forces do not change in motion or acceleration |
| Unbalanced Force | forces on an object that cause the net force to be other than zero; unbalanced forces produce a change in motion or acceleration |
| Friction | a force that oppose motion between two surfaces that are touching |
| Static Friction | when a force is applied to an object but does not cause the object to move |
| Kinetic Friction | occurs when two objects are moving relative to each other and rub together (like a sled on the ground). |
| Sliding Friction | when two solid surfaces slide against each other |
| Rolling Friction | the resistance that occurs when a round object such as a ball or tire rolls on a flat surface |
| Fluid Friction | forces that oppose the relative motion of an object through a fluid (a liquid or gas). |
| Gravity | a force of attraction between objects that is due to their masses |
| Weight | a measure of the gravitational force exerted on an object, usually by the Earth |
| Mass | the amount of matter that something is made of |
