matter anything that takes up space and has mass.
space the absence of matter.
energy the ability to do work or cause changes in motion; a tool is the calorimeter, some units are Joule (J) or calorie (cal) * kinetic energy
pure substance a sample of matter in which all particles are the same type of atom or molecule.
mixture a sample of matter in which all particles are not the same type of atom or molecule. *homogeneous mixture- appears the same throughout *heterogeneous mixture- does not appear the same throughout.
element a pure substance made of one type of atom.
compound a pure substance made of more than one type of atom.
Force a push or a pull; F ; unit is Newtons (N or Kg*m/s^2) , tool is the springscale
gravity the force of attraction between any two objects. this force gets greater with greater mass but gets less with greater distance between the objects.
weight a measurement of the force of gravity on an object; Fg ; unit is N ; tool is springscale
time a measurement of the duration between two events; t ; unit is a second ; a tool is a clock
mass a measurement of the amount of matter; m ; unit is a gram ; tool is the balance scale
distance a measurement from one point to another; /\x ; unit is the meter ; tool is the ruler
velocity the speed and direction of something; v ; unit is m/s ; tools are ruler and clock
acceleration the rate of change in velocity; a ; unit is m/s2 ; tools are ruler and clock
angle a measurement of the degree of difference of the direction of two lines which start at the same point; a tool is the protractor, a unit is the degree
area a measurement of two dimensional surfaces; a tool is the ruler, a unit is meters(squared) (m (squared))
friction a force of rubbing or colliding that opposes the direction of motion
