| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Humidity | The moisture content of the air. |
| Heat Index | A combination of temperature and humidity which indicates how hot you will feel as a result of humidity's affect on the sweating process. |
| Absolute Humidity | The mass of water vapor contained in a given volume of air. (usu. measured in g/L) |
| Relative Humidity | The ratio of the mass of water vapor in air at a given temperature to the maximum of water vapor the air could hold at that temperature. (expressed as percentage) |
| Saturated | Describes air that contains the maximum amount of moisture that it can hold at a given temperature. |
| Combustion | Burning |
| Parts per million | The number of molecules (or atoms) of a substance in a mixture for every 1 million molecules (or atoms) in that mixture. Abbreviated ppm. |
| Inert | Non-reactive |
| Greenhouse Affect | The process by which certain gases trap heat that radiates from earth. |
| Global Warming | Excess warming of the earth due to too much greenhouse affect. |
| Carbon Cycle | An explanation of where carbon comes from and where it goes in nature. |
| Industrial Revolution | An increase production of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases. |
| When did carbon dioxide concentration begin increasing? | Between 1910 and 1925. |
| When did the temperature begin increasing? | Between 1880 and 1895. |
| Why use ppm? | When concentrations are very small ppm is much easier to visualize than percent. |
| Ozone | One of the greenhouse gases that absorb the energy from infrared light, it is also able to filter out the damaging ultraviolet (UV) light from the sun. |
| Name some possible pollutants. | Sulfur Oxides ~ may cause lung damage Nitrogen Oxides ~ may cause lung damage Ozone ~ harmful to lungs if breathed Carbon Monoxide ~ reduces ability of blood to carry oxygen Airborne Lead ~ virtually non-existent today because of safe-guards |
| Scrubbers | Devices in smokestacks of factories which help clean sulfur oxides out of gases produced when fuel burns. |
| Ultraviolet light | A form of light that radiates from the sun which carries enough energy to cause severe damage to living tissue. |
