What are the six simple machines? wedge, wheel and axle, lever, inclined plane, pulley, screw
What is an inclined plane? A flat surface that is raised so one end is higher than the other.
What does an inclined plane help with? Moving heavy objects up or down.
Name an example of an inclined plane. ramp, ladder, staircase
What is a push or a pull that can change the speed, direction, or shape of a moving object? force
What is a pulley? a grooved wheel wth a rope moving around it
What are pulleys good for? lifting heavy objects.
Where can you find a pulley? flagpole, mast on a boat
What is work? When a force makes an object move.
What is a wheel and axle? a wheel that turns connected to an axle or rod that turns
How does a wheel and axle help with work? It makes it easier to move or turn things.
What is an example of a wheel and axle? bycycle wheel, door knob
What are simple machines? Tools used to make work easier.
What is a screw? An inclined plane wrapped around a cylinder or cone.
What does a screw do? a screw holds object together
What is an example of a screw? jar lid, base of a lightbulb
Describe a wedge? it is wide at one end and pointed at the other
What does a wedge do? it cuts or splits other objects
Name an example of a wedge. knife, axe, saw
What is a very rapid back and forth motion? vibration
What is a lever? A stiff bar that moves about a fixed point.
What does a lever do? it can push, pull, or lift
Name an example of a lever. seesaw, hammer, shovel
