Chapter 4 Terms

Elements, mixtures, and compounds

QuestionAnswer
element a pure substance that cannot be separated into simpler substances by physical or chemical means.
pure substance a substance in which there is only one type of particle.
atom the simplest particle for any element.
metals these elements tend to be shiny, good conductors of heat and electricity, malleable, ductile, and found left of the "stair-step".
nonmetals these elements tend to be insulators, look dull, brittle, and are right of the "stair-step"
metalliods these elemenets have properties of both metals and nonmetals, sometimes called semiconductors, and are found on the "stair-step".
