Elements, mixtures, and compounds

| element | a pure substance that cannot be separated into simpler substances by physical or chemical means. |
| pure substance | a substance in which there is only one type of particle. |
| atom | the simplest particle for any element. |
| metals | these elements tend to be shiny, good conductors of heat and electricity, malleable, ductile, and found left of the "stair-step". |
| nonmetals | these elements tend to be insulators, look dull, brittle, and are right of the "stair-step" |
| metalliods | these elemenets have properties of both metals and nonmetals, sometimes called semiconductors, and are found on the "stair-step". |
