Science matter MSMS

Matter test prep. MSMS

QuestionAnswer
Matter anything that has mass and takes up space.
Solid matter with definite shape and volume; has tightly packed particles that move mainly by vibrating.
Liquid matter with a definite volume but not definite shape that can flow from one place to another
Gas matter that does not have definite shape of volume; has particles that can move at high speeds in all directions
chemical change change in which the composition of a substance changes.
physical change change in which the form of an appearance of matter changes, but not its composition.
law of conservation of mass mass is neither created nor destroyed. Mass of substances before a physical or chemical change is equal to the mass after the change.
Sublimination
Electron Negatively charged particles in an atom
Weight the measurement of the force of gravity on an object
mass the amount of matter in an object
volume the amount of space an object
element pure substance. can't be broken down anymore. Examples: oxygen, gold, aluminum.
plasma the 4th state of matter. Requires very high heat
atom the most basic particle of an element.
proton positively charged particle in the center (nucleus) of an atom.
neutron a neutral particle in the center (nucleus) of an atom.
displacement a way to measure volume of irregular objects using a graduated cylinder and water.
milliliter a measurement of volume. Equals one cubic centimeter.
amorphous solid solids where particles are not arranged in a repeating pattern. examples rubber, glass, plastic.
nucleus The center of an atom. Contains protons and neutrons.
crystalline solid particles in this solid are arranged in repeating, three dimentional patterns. Examples salt, sugar, snow, sand
viscosity a liquid's resistance to flow.
dynamic particles that make up matter are said to be
gram a measurement of mass
