CH. 2 KEY TERMS
INTRO TO RADIOGRAPHY
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| ATTENUATION | Absorption of a portion of the x-ray beam by matter, usually the human body. |
| BUCKY | A device that contains a moving grid. |
| COLLIMATOR | A boxlike device attached under the tube housing that allows the operator to vary the size of the radiation field. |
| CR READER | Used in computed radiography to scan and process the latent image. A laser scan is used to release the stored image, which is collected and converted to an electrical signal and is then sent to the computer for viewing. |
| DETENT | A special mechanism that tends to stop a moving part in a specific location. They are build into tube supports to provide ease in attaining placement a standard locations. |
| DIGITAL RADIOGRAPHY (DR) | One of two types of imaging systems. DR is cassetteless because the systems do not use a cassette with phosphors. Instead the phosphor is bonded to a flat panel detector or the system converts x-ray energy directly to an electronic signal. |
| GRID | A device mounted under the tabletop surface that absorbs most of the scatter radiation coming off the patient and tabletop and prevents it from reaching the IR. |
| IMAGE RECEPTOR (IR) | The device that receives the energy of the x-ray beam and forms the image of the body part. The IR may be a screen-film cassette, a computed radiography (CR) imaging plate, or a solid-state digital receptor. |
| LATENT IMAGE | The image contained in the film before it is processed. |
| PRIMARY RADIATION | The radiation that leaves the tube. |
| RADIATION FIELD | The squared area of the x-ray beam that strikes the patient and the x-ray table. |
| REMNANT RADIATION | The radiation that exits or leaves the patient's body and exposes the film. |
| SCATTER RADIATION | Radiation that travels out through the absorbing matter in all directions. |
| SCATTER RADIATION FOG | The unwanted image exposure caused by scatter radiation. |
| TISSUE DENSITY | Mass |
| TRENDELENBURG POSITION | The position of the patient in which the head is lowered at least 15 degrees. |
| TUBE HOUSING | Lead lining surrounding the x-ray tube. |
| TUBE PORT | Opening in the tube housing that the x-rays exit through. |
| VISIBLE IMAGE | The image that is displayed on the computer monitor or is seen on radiographic film. |
| X-RAY BEAM | The triangular-shaped form of x-rays. |
| X-RAY TUBE | The source of x-rays. |
