| Hypothesis | a tentative statement about the relationship between two or more variables |
| Variables | Any measurable conditions, events, characteristics, or behaviors that are controlled or observed in study |
| Operational Definition | Describes the operations that will be used to measure or control a variable |
| Participants/Subjects | People or animals whose behavior is consistently observed in study |
| Data Collection Techniques | Procedures used to make observations and measurements |
| Journal | A periodical that publishes technical and scholarly material, usually in a narrow defined area of inquiry |
| Research Methods | Consists of various approaches to the observation, measurement, manipulation, and control of variables in empirical studies |
| Experiment | a research method in which a variable is manipulated under controlled conditions while observing the changes in a second variable for results |
| Experimental Group | subjects who receive special treatment in regard to the independent variable |
| Control Group | subjects who do not receive special treatment |
| Extraneous Variables | Any other variables other than the independent variable that could influence the dependent variable |
| Confounding of Variables | occurs when two variables are linked together in a way that makes it difficult to sort out their specific effects |
| Naturalistic Observation | careful observations without intervening directly with subjects |
| Reactivity | When a subject's behavior is altered by the presence of an observer |
| Case Study | an in-depth investigation of an individual subject |
| Standard Deviation | Measures variability in a set of data |
| Statistical Significance | Exists when the probability that the observed findings are due to chance is low |
| Socially Desirability Bias | a tendency to give socially approved answers |
| Response Set | a tendency to respond to questions in a particular way that is unrelated to the content of the question |
