Motion Unit

Motion Unit Vocab

TermDefinition
Conservation of momentum (PS2-1) Definition: The total momentum of a system stays the same if no external net force acts on it.
Energy transfer (PS2-1) Definition: Energy moves from one object or system to another.
Transfer (PS2-1) Definition: Movement of something, such as energy, from one place or object to another.
Force (PS2-1) Definition: A push or pull on an object.
Balanced force (PS2-1,2-2) Definition: Forces that cancel, producing zero net force.
Friction (PS2-1) Definition: A contact force that opposes sliding or attempted sliding between surfaces.
Direction of a force (PS2-1) Definition: The way a push or pull acts, such as left, right, up, or down.
Impact (PS2-1) Definition: A collision or forceful contact between objects.
Net force (PS2-1, PS2-2) Definition: The overall force found by combining all forces acting on an object.
Inertia (PS2-1) Definition: An object’s tendency to resist changes in its velocity (speed or direction)
Action/reaction (PS2-1) Definition: Two equal-strength, opposite-direction forces that interacting objects exert on each other.
Gravity (PS2-1) Definition: An attractive force between objects with mass
Acceleration (PS2-1) Definition: The rate at which velocity (speed or direction) changes over time.
Newton (PS2-1) Definition: The SI unit of force (N); one newton accelerates 1 kg at 1 m/s².
Thrust (PS2-1) Definition: A pushing force that propels an object, such as a rocket or jet.
Lift (PS2-1) Definition: A force perpendicular to airflow that can help support an aircraft.
Applied force (PS2-2) Definition: A push or pull exerted on an object by a another object.
Collision (PS2-2) Definition: An event in which objects strike or come into contact with each other.
Unbalanced force (PS2-2) Definition: Forces that do not cancel, leaving a nonzero net force and causing movement.
Position over time (PS2-2) Definition: How an object’s location changes as time passes.
Forms of energy (PS3-1) Definition: Different ways energy is described, such as kinetic, thermal, or chemical energy.
Magnitude (PS3-1) Definition: The size or amount of a quantity.
Motion energy (PS3-1) Definition: Kinetic energy: energy an object has because it is moving.
Proportional (PS3-1) Definition: Two quantities have a constant ratio; multiplying one by a factor multiplies the other by that factor. Example: F = Mass x Acceleration
Ratio (PS3-1) Definition: A comparison of two quantities by division.
Square root (PS3-1) Definition: A number that, when multiplied by itself, gives the original number.
Potential energy (PS3-1) Definition: Energy stored because of an object’s position, arrangement, or condition.
Elastic collision (PS3-1) Definition: A collision in which total kinetic energy is conserved.
Inelastic collision (PS3-1) Definition: A collision in which some kinetic energy changes into other forms of energy

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
