allusion a reference to a famous person, place, event, or text
text structure the way a text is organized
counterclaim an opposing argument
rhetorical device a technique used to persuade an audience
parallelism using a similar pattern of words or ideas
repetition repeating words or ideas for emphasis
extended metaphor a comparison that continues through part or all of a text
pronoun-antecedent agreement making sure a pronoun matches the noun it refers to
parallel structure using the same grammatical pattern in related ideas
connotation the feelings or associations connected to a word
characterization the way an author develops a character
mood the feeling created for the reader
tone the author's attitude toward the subject
symbol a person, object, or action that represents a larger idea
diction an author's choice of words
syntax the way words and sentences are arranged
imagery language that appeals to the senses
linear arranged in time order
non-linear not arranged in time order
flashback a scene that goes back to an earlier time
foreshadow clues about events that will happen later
subplot a secondary storyline
passive voice a sentence structure in which the action happens to the subject
active voice a sentence structure in which the subject performs the action
appositive a noun or noun phrase that renames another noun
voice an author's or speaker's unique style and personality
